On This Day (June 17): A Record 498 for England vs. the Netherlands

As of today, England's monumental total of 498/4 in 50 overs remains the highest score in ODI cricket

Two years ago, the England Cricket Team recorded the highest ODI total against the Netherlands. Led by Eoin Morgan, England broke the men's cricket record, which was set at 481 runs against Australia in June 2018 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. This incredible feat showcased England's exceptional batting depth and reinforced their status as a powerhouse in the ODI format.

Setting new standards: England's historic ODI score

The England Cricket Team also set a new benchmark by achieving the highest ODI score across men's and women's cricket. This record-breaking performance eclipsed the previous highest ODI score of 491 set by New Zealand Women against Ireland Women in 2018. Furthermore, England surpassed the highest-ever List A score, previously held by Surrey, who scored 496/4 against Gloucestershire at the Kennington Oval in London in April 2007. This monumental achievement underscored England's dominant presence in limited-overs cricket, showcasing their unparalleled batting prowess.

Batting brilliance unleashed: England's stellar display

Following their decision to bat first, England's hitters produced a historically significant display. Jos Buttler (162 not out of 70), Dawid Malan (125 off 109), and Philip Salt (122 off 93) all shattered century. Furthermore, Liam Livingstone struck 66 off 22 balls, a scorching knock contributing to England's record-breaking total.

Buttler needed only 47 balls to reach the hundred mark during his innings whereas in 65 balls, he scored 150 run, becoming the second-fastest player to score 150 runs in an ODI. On the other hand, Dawid Malan became just the third player from England to make a century in all three game types, following Buttler and Heather Knight.

Not to forget, Livingstone also created the record of scoring England’s fastest 50 in ODI, hitting the milestone in 17 balls.

Unmatched feat: England's trio of centurions

Only on two other instances, three players of a team have scored centuries. In 2015 when South Africa played the West Indies at Wanderers, Hashim Amla, Rilee Rossouw, and AB de Villiers scored centuries. The second instance also involved South Africa when they played India at the Wankhede with Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, and AB de Villiers scoring centuries.

In response

In response, the Netherlands team got bundled in 266 runs. The number may seem low but for an inexperienced team like the Netherlands, scoring 266 was commendable. Scott Edwards went massive with 72 runs off 56 balls whereas Max O’Dowd added 55 runs off 55 balls. Musa Ahmad, Tom Cooper and Bas de Leede scored 21, 23 and 28 runs, respectively. Even in the lower order, captain Pieter Seelar contributed 25 runs off 38 balls.

However, England’s bowling prowess of Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Reese Topley and David Willey restricted the Netherlands to 266 runs in 49.4 overs.

For his 162 runs off 70 balls, Jost Butler was awarded the Player of the Match award.
