Mammootty Birthday Special: Thrillers That Have Rocked the OTT Space in Recent Times

Mammootty turns 74 on September 7, but he has no intention of slowing down

A superstar of the Malayalam film industry, Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail, fondly known as Mammootty, turns 75 on September 7. Once limited to a Southern Indian audience, Mammootty now enjoys a new fan following, thanks to OTT platforms that have made him accessible to a pan-Indian audience. And the audience has fallen in love with Mammootty, not only because of his brilliant acting and screen presence, but also because of his ability to pick thrillers, a genre that has seen a very limited share of success in the Indian film industry, ranging from Bollywood to other regional industries.

To celebrate Mammootty’s special day, we have listed several thriller movies from Mammootty’s filmography that have rocked the OTT space in recent times.

Released in 2023, Kannur Squad is inspired by real events, revolving around the lives of a police unit named Kannur Squad, which was formed by Kannur SP S Sreejith. From one perspective, the movie seems to be a plot of a cat-and-mouse chase. However, the investigation involved in the movie turns it into a thriller that maintains a pace and never lets the audience focus on anything else. The movie is available on JioHotstar.

Rorschach

A vacation with a pregnant wife is supposed to be peaceful and soothing. However, not in Rorschach, as Mammootty’s pregnant wife disappears while the duo travels through a forest. What follows is a series of twists and turns, but Mammootty ultimately discovers the truth about his wife and avenges her demise. The film was heavily praised by critics, with most reviewers giving it 4 or 3.5 out of 5. Rorschach is also available on JioHotstar.

Bramayugam

A film so brilliant that it was used to study sound design by the University of Creative Arts in the United Kingdom. Released in 2024, Bramayugam follows a black-and-white format with a gripping horror tale that incorporates folklore from Kerala.

Bramayugam is one of the most experimental roles Mammootty has ever done. His looks, laugh, and the way he conveys horror are bound to give the viewer goosebumps, even though this film is not like generic horror movies with multiple jump scares. Rather, Bramayugam is more like the tales your grandmother used to tell you when you were a kid, but with a negative twist. The movie is available on SonyLiv.

Munnariyippu
