What Happened Last Time and What Awaits in 2025
The cricketing calendar seldom gives supporters a break, and 2025 is no exception. Team India is ready to shift gears following a tough Border-Gavaskar Test series against Australia. What happens next? A high-stakes white-ball series against England on home turf. With five T20Is commencing January 22 and three ODIs beginning February 6, this series is critical preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy. England’s white-ball juggernaut, captained by Jos Buttler, is ready to face India’s resurgent side in cricketing hotspots such as Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Ahmedabad.
But before we get into what comes next, let’s take a look back at their previous T20I series. Spoiler alert: It was a rollercoaster of runs, wickets, and memorable performances.
In July 2022, India toured England for a three-match T20I series. It turned out to be quite the show! India won the series 2-1, thanks to standout individual performances and decisive team efforts.
The series opener in Southampton saw India dominate from start to finish. Batting first, India scored an impressive 198/8. Hardik Pandya, who appeared to have overcome his knee issues, scored a spectacular 51 from 33 balls, while Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda contributed 39 and 33, respectively.
Pandya was not done yet. When England came out to chase, his blazing spell cut through the top of their lineup. He ended with 4/33, completely shredding England’s batting lineup. Moeen Ali’s brave 36 could not save the hosts, who were bowled out for 148 in just 19.3 overs. India cruised to a 50-run win, earning Pandya the Player of the Match award.
If Pandya owned Southampton, then Edgbaston was all about Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The crafty swing bowler had a superb session of 3/15, including the valuable wicket of Jos Buttler for a duck. Chasing 171, England failed under India’s disciplined bowling assault, scoring only 121 in 17 overs.
India’s batting was not without drama. At one point, India was down to 89/5, but Ravindra Jadeja came up with an unbeaten 46 off 29 balls to lead them to a contested 170/8. With a 49-run victory, India won the series with one game remaining.
Though the series was essentially settled, the last match at Trent Bridge was anything but a dead rubber. England batted first and scored a massive 215/7, thanks to Dawid Malan’s impressive 77 and Liam Livingstone’s mighty 42*.
Suryakumar Yadav’s astonishing 117 off 55 balls propelled India’s reply, and he appeared to have a response for every delivery England threw at him. While his innings was a masterpiece in control and creativity, India lost by 17 runs due to a lack of assistance from the other end. Nonetheless, SKY’s ton remains one of the best batting performances in T20I history.

Fast-forward to 2025 and the stage is set for another smash hit series. India led by Suryakumar Yadav will attempt to underline its supremacy at home, while England, boosted by its white-ball reputation, will seek to settle old scores.
The series promises fast-paced action, with players like Sanju Samson and Tilak Verma in peak form and Arshdeep Singh continuing to work his magic with the ball. Due to Jos Buttler’s tactical ability and aggressive batting depth, England are formidable opponents.
