The venues for these confrontations include three of India’s most renowned stadiums: Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai, where the teams will compete for dominance. With Jos Buttler heading the England squad in all formats, the stage is set for more exciting clashes between these two cricketing titans.
In the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, India was on the verge of elimination in this Group E encounter. England made a competitive total of 153/7, with Kevin Pietersen leading the way with 46 runs. Ryan Sidebottom (2/31) and Graeme Swann (2/28) made significant contributions with the ball, taking wickets at critical periods.
India’s chase, however, fell short by only three runs. Despite MS Dhoni (30) and Yusuf Pathan’s (33) late heroics, India finished on 150/5 after 20 overs. India needed 19 from the last over, and despite hitting a big six, they failed to cross the line. Yuvraj Singh’s stumping of Swann was a significant turning point.
This exciting clash at Edgbaston in 2014 is one for the books. After registering a frightening 180/7, England had India in a tight place at 160/5, needing 17 runs from the 20th over.
MS Dhoni hit a six off the first delivery, but with 5 runs needed off the last two balls, India’s hopes were crushed when Dhoni’s swing missed Chris Woakes’ slower ball on the final ball. Eoin Morgan had previously led the way for England, scoring 71* off 31 balls. England won by just three runs in this thrilling climax.
In the second T20I of the 2017 series, India maintained their composure in an exciting conclusion in Nagpur. After India reached 144/8, England came close to chasing down the target thanks to solid play from their top order.
With 8 required off the final 6 balls, Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the hero. Bumrah produced a superb last over, giving only 2 runs and grabbing two wickets to give India a 5-run victory as England finished at 139/6.
In a thrilling conclusion at Wankhede in 2012, England won with the last ball. India finished with 177/8 in 20 overs, and England needed three runs from the last delivery to win.
With steely nerves, Eoin Morgan smashed the ball over the sightscreen for a match-winning six, delivering England’s most successful chase in T20Is. Despite MS Dhoni’s best efforts, the game concluded to England’s advantage, demonstrating Morgan’s poise under pressure.
In the Ahmedabad 2021 match, India set a competitive total of 185/8. Suryakumar Yadav’s 57 off 31 balls was the high point of the innings, helping India recover from early losses. Ben Stokes led England’s chase with an effective 46-run performance but fell short at 177/8.
