Happy Birthday, Juhi Chawla: When The Actress Had 'Cold War' With Aamir Khan For Years

After 6-7 years of the 'cold war', Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan got back on talking terms - thanks to the latter's ex-wife, Reena Dutta.

Juhi Chawla now prefers to stay away from showbiz, making only occasional appearances in films and web shows. However, whenever her name is mentioned, it just lights up faces instantly, especially of those who grew up during the 1990s and early 2000s. You know, back then, she was quite a phenomenon (she still is though) all across the nation. There was something magical about her in all those films - 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak', 'Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman', 'Lootere', 'Darr', 'Saajan Ka Ghar', and 'Yes Boss' among others - that resonated with audiences on a deeply personal level. Whether it's her vivacious personality, her infectious smile, or just the way she looked and talked and behaved on the screen; there's a sense of genuineness in her, making us feel that this is someone we have known for ages and someone we can trust wholeheartedly. Today, although she is almost on a hiatus from films (occupied with her businesses), her legacy continues to shine and stay apart!

Born on November 13, 1967, Juhi Chawla has been part of every kind of cinema (both mainstream and parallel) in her career. However, it goes without saying that she is most celebrated for her romantic films, especially from the early 90s. And particularly, it's her on-screen chemistry with actor Aamir Khan that's still popular among fans. Having said that, not many know that the two were once not on talking terms for about 6-7 years.

The actress celebrates her 57th birthday today. On this occasion, let's have a throwback to that.

Juhi Chawla & Aamir Khan - An Iconic Pair Of Hindi Cinema

There can be little arguing that Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan are one of Hindi cinema's most iconic pairs of all time. The two made their debuts (as the lead) together in 1988 with 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak', emerging as overnight stars. And they went on to collaborate in several superhit films, including 'Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke', 'Tum Mere Ho', 'Love LoveLove', 'Daulat Ki Aag', 'Aatank Hi Aatank', and 'Ishq'.

Besides their on-screen chemistry, the two were close friends in real life as well. However, after 'Ishq', things took a turn and they stopped talking for almost seven years.

So, What Had Happened?

During the production of 'Ishq', Aamir Khan used to continuously prank Juhi. One day, his pranks went too far, leaving the actress genuinely upset. Hence, she decided not to come on the sets the following day.

The shoot for that day got canceled. And Khan, known for his professionalism, got very angry about that. Subsequently, this led to years of cold war between them. As the actress later shared in an interview, "He (Khan) made me cry with his pranks, and after our last fight, I got really mad at him and didn't turn up for the shoot the next day, which made him very angry. We stopped talking to each other. Both of us felt that we were angry with each other, and we assumed that now we wouldn't talk to each other ever. We didn't speak for about five to seven years."

Aamir Khan, on the other hand, shared in one of his interviews, "During the shoot of Ishq, we fought over a small issue. It was a petty one, but I think I was a little egoistic then. So, I decided I will not speak to her again. Even on sets, I would keep a distance from her. I don’t know why I behaved that way. Even when she would come and sit beside me, I would walk out. I would go and sit at least 50 feet away from her (laughs). I never greeted her or bid her goodbyes. Only during the scene, if we were required to speak, I would talk to her. But it was only professional.”

How It Came To An End

It was during Khan's divorce from his first wife, Reena Dutta, that his cold war with Juhi Chawla came to an end. In his words, "... So, for the next six-seven years, we did not speak. But when she got to know about my divorce with Reena, she called me up and asked to meet. Juhi had been close to both Reena and me, and she wanted to sort out our differences. Juhi somewhere knew I might not pick up her call, but still, she called me. That touched me and I knew the friendship hadn’t been affected a bit between us. We might not have been on talking terms but had continued to care for each other."
