Happy Birthday Ayushmann Khurrana: Tracing The Prolific Actor’s Rise To Stardom

Ayushmann Khurrana established himself as an actor with several box-office hits, especially social comedy-dramas.

Ayushmann Khurrana celebrates his 40th birthday on Saturday, September 14, 2024. Despite having a few struggling years in the start of his career, he ended up with several record-breaking films at the box office. In fact, he is known to pick the most interesting subjects for his films. Be it Vicky Donor or Article 15, his films are a perfect amalgamation of social messages and entertainment.

Early Life

The actor was born in a Punjabi Hindu family as Nishant Khurrana on 14 September 1984, in Chandigarh. His parents are Poonam and P. Khurrana, the latter being a famous astrologer. When he was just three years old, his name was changed to Ayushmann Khurrana. During his college years in Chandigarh, he took part in serious theatre for 5 years, and did a few plays in Gaiety Theatre, Shimla, as well. He remained a founding member of the active Chandigarh theatre groups at DAV College. He even bagged the Best Actor award for portraying the role of Ashwatthama in Dharamvir Bharati's Andha Yug.

Moving ahead, he participated in the second season of MTV show Roadies in 2004, and emerged as the winner. That’s when he got into the anchoring profession.

Bollywood Career

Ayushmann Khurrana made his film debut in 2012 with the romantic comedy Vicky Donor, and the role bagged him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. Following a few misses including Nautanki Saala!, Bewakoofiyaan, and Hawaizaada, he got noticed with his critically successful Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015).

He then went on to star in several comedy dramas, including Bareilly Ki Barfi, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (both 2017), Badhaai Ho (2018), Dream Girl, and Bala (both 2019) – and all of them got him praise. He then started picking interesting scripts, and starred in crime thriller Andhadhun (2018); and the crime drama Article 15 (2019). His nuanced performances as a blind pianist in Andhadhun and a cop in Article 15 got him two Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.

In 2020, he featured in Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, and then witnessed a major commercial success in Dream Girl 2 (2023).

Honours

Ayushmann Khurrana has been a recipient of a National Film Award, which he won for AndhaDhun, and four Filmfare Awards. The actor was also named in Time as one of the “100 most influential people in the world” in 2020.
