Cricket & Football in Summer: How to Play Safely & Stay Energized

Kick, Bat, and Hydrate – Your Summer Sports Guide!

Indian summers are undoubtedly harsh, but that shouldn't stop sports enthusiasts from hitting the ground. Cricket and football are more than just games in India—they’re a way of life. But playing under the blazing sun can take a toll on your body if you’re not careful enough. So, how to play outdoor games with the same energy high in summer? Let’s explore some smart, fun, and practical tips!

Time It Right – Early Bird or Sunset Warrior?

The game is all about timing, right? Accordingly, you need to find out the best time to play cricket or football during summer. It should be either early morning or late evening. Avoid the 11 AM to 4 PM window. Otherwise, you can rent a shaded ground during this time to play along with your buddies.

Hydration is Your Secret Weapon

The body cools down by sweating. However, you lose both water and minerals from the body excessively. To combat the issue, drink plenty of water at least half an hour before the game. During breaks, don't forget to sip water and electrolytes. Coconut water and homemade nimbu-pani are also great desi options to rehydrate. Skip those sugary sodas and energy drinks—they give a quick high and a fast crash.

Dress Cool, Stay Cool

Wearing the right clothes can make a huge difference for outdoor games in summer. Choose light-coloured, loose, and breathable fabrics like cotton or dry-fit materials. Wearing a cap is a must while fielding in cricket or playing football under the sun. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen!

Fuel Your Game – What to Eat

Food is your fuel, especially while playing under the sun. Don't make the mistake of playing on an empty stomach, but also avoid heavy meals. Some ideal pre-game snacks are banana, peanut butter sandwich, and a bowl of curd with fruits. As soon as the game finishes, have a protein shake of a glass of buttermilk. You can also carry boiled eggs or sprouts salad.

Stretch It Out – Warm-Up & Cool Down

Are skipping warm-up before the game or forgetting to cool-down after the match finishes? Big mistake! Your muscles need to ease into the game and relax afterward. Start with 5 minutes of light jogging, followed by dynamic stretches like arm circles, high knees, lunges. After the match, do gentle stretches to tackle soreness the next day.

Play Smart Together

Whether you’re smashing boundaries or dribbling down the field, don't forget to keep an eye on your teammates. Lookout for heatstroke signs like dizziness, unusual fatigue, cramps, and confusion. If you observe these signs for anybody, stop the game immediately and help them cool down immediately.

Make the Game Fun & Competitive – Not Risky

Remember, pushing your limits in extreme heat often leads to heatstroke or injury. Don't take too much stress, take quick breaks every 15–20 minutes. Participate in a shorter format of the game. Don't forget to listen to your body - if you are feeling exhausted, take rest!

Of course, cricket and football are fantastic ways to stay active, make new friends, and enjoy summer. But the key is to play smart.
