Beautiful Hollywood movies that don’t have a happy ending

“And they lived happily ever after” is not always how a story ends. Many times it is the sad or unexpected climax that makes a beautiful movie even more special and so you tend to cherish them longer. Here are a few of our favorites. Edward ScissorHands (1990) Some people say early Tim Burton is the best Tim Burton. We think it’s simply because it is hard to top masterpieces like Edward ScissorHands. This fantasy romance came out in 1990 where Johnny Depp played the central character of a humanoid with scissors in place of hands. The movie is such a roller-coaster – Edward ScissorHands accidently cuts and kills his creator. Then he lived alone in his guilt and heartache until a girl came along. Now that he has a friend, will he finally be happy? Let’s just say that the movie ends with him back in his tower alone at the end making snow and most of us in the audience bawling our eyes out. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) This Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet starrer romantic comedy is about an estranged couple who erased each other from their memories through some procedure after a messy breakup. However, Joel (played by Jim Carrey) realizes that he doesn’t want to forget his partner halfway through the procedure. As memories crashed around him, Joel tries to hold on to the last memory. Wall E (2008) This animation film is about a waste collecting robot WALL-E in a distant future with a glitch. The glitch is the personality he developed that made him highly curious and lonely…until he met EVE – another robot. Meeting her opens up a whole new world full of brand new experiences and feelings for him. It’s a beautiful representation of love and loss between two robots without saying a single sentence. Fox and the hound (1989) Fox and the Hound was a Disney animated movie that was based on a 1967 novel by the same name. This is one of Disney’s darker movies even though it is an animated film for kids. The movie revolves around a fox named Tod and a hound puppy named Cooper who vows to remain best friends forever. This is one of those movies where you feel sad for every character.  You feel bad for Tod and Copper for their lost friendship. You feel bad for Tod's mother being killed. You feel bad for Tweed for having to give up Tod and strangest of all, you even feel bad for the villain Slade for all the trouble Tod caused him through the movie. Don’t be fooled by the Disney tag – Fox and the hound may leave you sad for rest of the week.
