Skin issues can affect anyone, from newborns to older adults. They often result in what Ayurveda terms the "4 D's"—disfigurement, disability, discomfort, and, in rare cases, death. The skin, being our largest and most visible organ, reflects the body's internal health. This connection between external appearance and internal balance is at the heart of Ayurvedic wisdom.

According to Ayurveda, skin problems arise due to imbalances in the body's doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and dhatus (tissues). Poor lifestyle choices and an incompatible diet are key culprits. Eating foods of opposite natures (viruddhara) or living against one's body constitution and seasons leads to toxin buildup. These toxins (ama) accumulate in the skin and other tissues, causing various disorders. Among the three doshas, Pitta, associated with heat and fire, is most often linked to skin ailments like rashes, acne, and inflammation.

Ayurveda's core treatment philosophy

Ayurveda doesn't merely treat the symptoms. It targets the root cause. Treatments aim to detoxify the body and restore balance. Popular therapies include Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), and Rakhtamoksham (bloodletting). These therapies cleanse the body and skin from within. Alongside, herbal medicines (shaman aushadhis) help maintain and prevent further skin issues.

Abhyanga

The ancient practice of Abhyanga, or oil massage, is a game-changer for skin health. Oils are chosen based on your dosha—sesame oil for Vata, coconut oil for Pitta, and jojoba oil for Kapha. Massaging the skin not only enhances circulation but also detoxifies and nourishes deeply. Regular Abhyanga adds a radiant glow, improves elasticity, and rejuvenates dull skin.
