Akshay Kumar at 58: The Birthday Story of How Rejection in Modelling Landed Him His First Film

From missed flights to megastar heights, the Khiladi’s journey proves that fate often hides behind failure

At first glance, Akshay Kumar’s story might seem like a typical Bollywood tale of determination and glamour. But hidden within is a moment of pure serendipity, a fleeting instant that changed his life forever.

On his 58th birthday, it is worth reflecting on the day when a missed modelling assignment unexpectedly opened the door to his first film contract.

A boy with big dreams

Born Rajiv Bhatia in Amritsar and raised in the bustling bylanes of Delhi before relocating to Mumbai, Akshay Kumar grew up with ambitions that far exceeded his modest surroundings.

He experimented with martial arts, trained in Bangkok as a chef and martial arts instructor, and returned to India with hopes of entering the glamorous world. Modelling appeared to be the quickest route. He posed for small assignments and waited for the elusive big break.

The rejection that changed everything

In 1991, a modelling job in Bangalore was meant to be his great opportunity. But a simple misreading of a flight schedule cost him dearly. The agency declared him unprofessional and dismissed him immediately. For a struggling newcomer, it could have been the end of the road. Yet, as the day progressed, fate had other plans.

Dejected but restless, he walked into Natraj Studios to meet acquaintances. A casual introduction to a make-up artist there led him to producer Pramod Chakravorty.

Within hours, the aspiring model was signed for not just one but three films. By evening, he was holding his first pay cheque — a moment that marked the true beginning of Akshay Kumar, the actor.

The first steps in cinema

Though Chakravorty’s Deedar was his first signing, Akshay’s debut film was Saugandh in 1991. Soon after came Khiladi (1992), a movie that not only became a hit but also earned him the nickname that has defined him for decades—the “Khiladi” of Bollywood. From performing high-octane stunts to adding humour into action, he crafted an image that made him both relatable and aspirational.

A career built on discipline

What set Akshay apart was not just his talent but his unwavering discipline. Known for his punctuality, strict fitness routine, and refusal to be stereotyped, he effortlessly moved across genres—action, comedy, drama, and even socially conscious films. With over 130 films to his name, he became one of Bollywood’s most commercially successful stars.

The pandemic years only strengthened his work ethic. While most productions came to a halt, he was the first major actor to return to filming, resuming work on Bell Bottom in the UK. His adaptability reflected the resilience that had characterised his early struggles.

Beyond the Khiladi image

Today, Akshay Kumar is more than just a film star. He is one of the highest-paid actors worldwide, a philanthropist, and a symbol of consistency in an industry often characterised by unpredictability.

His films range from nationalistic dramas like Kesari to light-hearted comedies like Housefull, and from socially-conscious stories like Pad Man to historical epics like Prithviraj. The diversity of his work reflects not only ambition but also an instinct to remain relevant amidst changing times.

As he celebrates his 58th birthday, one cannot help but marvel at the irony of his origin story. A rejection that could have ended his modelling career became the very twist of fate that propelled him into films. It serves as a reminder that life often conceals its greatest opportunities behind failure.
