From sparking excitement to inviting fear, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been the talk of the town throughout 2023..

“I would call this an inflection moment,” pioneering AI scientist Fei-Fei Li said. “2023 is, in history, hopefully going to be remembered for the profound changes of the technology as well as the public awakening. It also shows how messy this technology is. It was a year for people to figure out what this is, how to use it, what’s the impact — all the good, the bad and the ugly,” she said.

As we are at the end of 2023, omnipresence of AI is more palpable than ever. Truly, Artificial intelligence went mainstream in 2023, yet it has a long way to go for this technology to match people’s fantasies of human-like machines. There is no innovation like AI to evoke as much excitement, curiosity, or debate as AI. In this article, we will go through some important advancements AI has gone through this year.

AI in healthcare:

Artificial intelligence technology has truly revolutionized personalised healthcare, with a huge potential to greatly improve patient outcomes and preventive actions.

AI helps healthcare providers in optimising diagnosis and treatment plans by analysing the efficacy of different interventions and providing suggestions for modifications based on individual patient.

Recently, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said: “Our National AI Portal will play a crucial role in supporting and promoting these AI initiatives. We have prepared government policies and programs inspired by the spirit of 'AI For All'. Our endeavour is to take full advantage of the capabilities of AI for social development and inclusive growth. India is fully committed to responsible and ethical use of AI,” as he emphasised on Indian government’s development mantra “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.”

From drug development, Robotic surgery, medical imaging, situation of mental health to risk management, artificial intelligence has been changing the healthcare sector broadly.

AI in other technologies:

Various companies are coming up with AI feature in devices. Samsung has already launched its new PC series "Galaxy Book4" powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

"The Galaxy Book4 series plays a key role in bringing best-in-class connectivity to our ecosystem that will broaden how people interact with their PC, phone, tablet and other devices for truly intelligent and connected experiences," TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, said in a statement.

The Edge Artificial Intelligence appliance is also developed to improve computer vision solutions for railways and vehicles.

Additionally, some companies have developed fully functional organic photovoltaic instrument using AI.

Panic over AI:

Worries regarding AI has been increasing day by day as generative AI tools threatened the livelihoods of people associated with any creative format like writing, drawing, singing codes for a living. It prompted strikes by Hollywood writers and actors.

They have already filed lawsuits against generative AI firms for using their data to train AI systems without any permission. Various celebrities have already sued OpenAI and Meta for copyright infringement as numerous AI models were trained without their consent.

The European Union has now reached a broad political agreement on a new law governing the use AI technologies.

What's next?

As Indian firms are significantly increasing their investments in artificial intelligence (AI), a new report on Wednesday said that about 42 % of enterprises are preparing to spend more than Rs 50 crore on Artificial Intelligence initiatives in upcoming economic year.

According to CyberMedia Research (CMR); “As enterprises gear up to allocate substantial budgets, the increasing role of AI, especially generative AI, in shaping customer experiences and driving data-driven decision-making as competitive differentiators become evident.”

Yes, of course, people will be more dependent on AI technology, as per recent reports.

The Microsoft founder Bill Gates recently said, "AI can be used to improve access to education, mental health, and more. It motivates me to make sure this technology helps reduce—and doesn’t contribute to—the awful inequities we see around the world. I've always been a firm believer in the power of innovation to offer every child an equal chance to survive and thrive. AI is no exception.”
