The 2024 Lok Sabha Elections met with a successful end on the 1st of June. The results, which came out yesterday (4th of June) highlighted several prime figures and big faces who lost their ticket to the lower house of the Parliament.
The Election Commission of India has declared the results for 542 out of 543 Lok Sabha seats.
Although the BJP-led NDA government garnered 292 seats, BJP alone as a party couldn't cross the majority mark of 272 as it could only manage to collect 240 votes on its own. On the other hand, the Indian National Congress trailed with 99 votes.
BJP's performance in this general election stumbled from what was the scenario in 2019, where BJP won with more than 300 votes.
Incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi is once again set to resume his term as the PM for the third time.
This general election has been very fascinating with results showing many big names who lost to their counterparts. In this article, we will have a look at those MPs who didn't make it to the lower house of the parliament this time.
BJP titans Smriti Irani, Arjun Munda and Ajay Mishra Teni are among many others who lost their seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP is now compelled to form a government with the alliances in the NDA after these losses. This is a big shift from the 2014 and 2019 sweeping mandates, where BJP won 282 and 303 seats respectively, achieving a majority on its own- without counting the alliance NDA votes.
One of the most high profile defeats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is that of Smriti Irani in Amethi. In 2019, Ms Irani who had defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, lost to Kishori Lal Sharma of INC by a huge margin of 1,68,196 votes. This defeat marks an end of era for Amethi which was seen as a BJP bastion under MP Smriti Irani's leadership.
Ajay Mishra Teni who was involved in the controversial Lakhimpur Kheri incident, lost to Utkarsh Verma of Samajwadi Party by over 34,329 votes. Ajay Mishra Teni is the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs.
Arjun Munda, who is Union Tribal Affairs Minister, suffered a major defeat in the hands of Jharkhand's Khunti constituency Congress candidate Kalicharan Munda by 1,49,675 votes.
In Rajasthan's Barmer, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Kailash Choudhary, secured the third position, trailing by 4.48 lakh votes behind Congress's Ummeda Ram Beniwal, who emerged victorious.
Rajeev Chandrashekhar is the Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram. He lost to one of Congress' most indomitable candidates Shashi Tharoor by a count of over 16,077 votes.
The BJP's knockbacks aren't limited to these heavyweights only as ministers such as Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Rao Saheb Dance, V Muraleedharan, Subhas Sarkar, Mahendra Nath Pandey, Sanjeev Balyan, RK Singh, L Murugan, Nishith Pramanik, Kushal Kishore also accepted defeats in the polls.
