Spotlight Business: Travel Industry Making Up 10% Of Global GDP In 2024 - What's Fueling This Surge?

People are now traveling more than ever, contributing enormously to the travel industry's growth.

The travel industry worldwide has witnessed a remarkable surge in its revenue in recent years. According to an annual report by the World Travel and Tourism Council, the industry's contribution to global GDP in 2024 will be $11.1 trillion, a 12.1% year-over-year surge, making up about 10% of global GDP. The most is expected to come from countries like the US, China, and Germany.

According to the report, the travel industry may support over 348 million jobs this year, which is 13.6 million more than the previous record in 2019 (pre-pandemic). Julia Simpson, CEO of WTTC, said in a statement, "Despite some concerns last year about us going into a global recession and high inflation, this year we are looking at travel and tourism being a real economic powerhouse globally."

Well, this is inarguably great news for the entire global economy. And here comes an important question: what exactly is fueling such an unprecedented rise in the industry? In this article, let's discuss that in detail.

Globalization

Globalization (becoming more and more evident with time) and travel go hand in hand. The world is now interconnected more than ever, and hence people are more ready to travel abroad. Today, there's improved travel infrastructure and more accessibility everywhere. On the other hand, it has increased awareness about destinations among travelers.

According to industry reports, the expected number of international tourists in 2024 is about 1.53 billion, significantly more than last year's (975 million).

The Digital Tourism Marketing

Digital marketing has benefitted every sector, and tourism is no exception at all. From social media content to travel blogs to search engine optimization (SEO) and more – numerous options support the industry today. Companies can easily identify their target customers with digital marketing and promote their services accordingly. Online reviews help travelers to plan their trips effortlessly and make the most out of them. All these have resulted in a remarkable surge in revenue.

According to a report, the industry spent over $6 billion last year on digital marketing.

The Remote Work Culture

The rise of remote work culture post-pandemic has totally transformed the way we travel. Thanks to the ability to work from literally anywhere, many working professionals nowadays prefer to blend work and travel, making workations the biggest travel trend at this moment. 'Digital nomadism' is a thing today where people work while traveling across the world for a long time. According to a report, they contribute a global economic value of US$787 billion per year.

Notably, over 35 million digital nomads were reported last year worldwide.

The Latest Technology

With several mobile apps, people today can book their flights, hotels, or even entire trips with just a click. Generative AI tools can be used for trip planning, while virtual and augmented reality are opening the door to a whole new concept of traveling. And the best part is that new technologies are emerging consistently, catering to evolving preferences.

Thanks to all these, people are now more inclined towards traveling, contributing significantly to the industry's growth.

Well, this is only the beginning - and the scene is expected to get even better with time.
