Ahead of the clash, we take a look back at top footballers who have had the honour of representing both clubs, playing at the Emirates Stadium as well as at the Stamford Bridge.
A player who played for Chelsea and Arsenal? The first name that hovers on our minds is legendary goalkeeper PetrCech in his rugby scrum-like helmet. Cech spent 12 seasons at the Stamford Bridge, winning four Premier League trophies, one Champions League title, and several other domestic and international club tournaments. Towards the end of his career, he moved to Arsenal for two seasons, during which he lifted the FA Cup and FA Community Shield.
One of the finest midfielders Spain has ever produced, CescFàbregas spent eight seasons at Arsenal, where, even though he did not win any major trophy, he was groomed rightly to become a skilled midfielder. He found success in Barcelona and, in 2014, made a move back to England with Chelsea. In the Blues’ jersey, he won the Premier League twice and the Europa League in 2018/2019.
A product of Arsenal’s youth system, Ashley Cole was hailed as one of the greatest defenders of his generation. A left-back of the highest stature, Cole kicked off his professional football career in 1996 with Arsenal, winning the Premier League twice before making a move to Stamford Bridge in 2006. In the Blues’ jersey, Cole lifted the Premier League, Champions League, and multiple other domestic football titles.
Brazilian winger Willian was an absolute beast, and we believe he was quite underrated as well, given he isn’t remembered often by the present-gen football fans. Willian spent seven years at Chelsea, playing 339 games across competitions, scoring 63 goals and 57 assists. With Chelsea, he won two Premier Leagues, one Europa League, and multiple domestic titles. In 2020, he moved to Arsenal with a three-year contract but left the club in one season, describing his time at Arsenal as “the worst time that he had lived as a professional.”
One of the most prolific strikers of his generation, Olivier Giroud was a crucial member of Arsenal for six long years, even though he could win important trophies with the Gunners. Although, in 253 games for Arsenal, he scored 105 goals and made 37 assists, which proves his mettle. At Chelsea, he spent three seasons, but they were much more fruitful compared to his time at Arsenal. After all, while playing for Chelsea, he won the Champions League and Europa League, scoring 39 goals in 119 games for the club.
In the upcoming game, two players, i.e., Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling, have played for both clubs. Havertz was a Chelsea player who now represents Arsenal, whereas Sterling is still a Chelsea player, but this season, he has been loaned to Arsenal for a year.
