On This Day (July 7): Happy Birthday, Dhoni – The Greatest Milestones of Thala

Following a disappointing performance in the 2007 ODI World Cup, where Dhoni struggled, he was entrusted with the leadership of India's team for the inaugural T20 World Cup

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, known for his flair as a batsman, prowess as a wicket-keeper, and strategic insight as a leader, marks his 43rd birthday today. Born into a modest family in Ranchi on July 7, 1981, Dhoni entered the world of professional cricket in 1998 with Central Coalfields Limited. Throughout an illustrious career of over 15 years, Dhoni evolved from a fearless match-finisher to earning the renowned moniker 'Captain Cool'. As we celebrate his birthday, let us look at some pivotal milestones that define Thala’s illustrious journey.

A glimpse of Dhoni’s future

Dhoni made his ODI debut in 2004 but struggled to make a significant impact. However, in the second ODI against Pakistan in 2005 at Visakhapatnam, Dhoni indeed announced himself to the world. He played a breathtaking inning, scoring 148 runs off 123 balls, including 15 boundaries and two sixes. Dhoni also showcased his skills as a wicket-keeper, taking two catches during the match. India emerged victorious, defeating Pakistan by a commanding margin of 58 runs.

Taking charge

Following a disappointing performance in the 2007 ODI World Cup, where Dhoni struggled, he was entrusted with the leadership of India's team for the inaugural T20 World Cup. Dhoni's performance in the ODI World Cup saw him score only 29 runs across three matches. Displaying his astute captaincy and unwavering composure, Dhoni guided India to victory, culminating in a triumph over Pakistan in the final to lift the trophy. Throughout the tournament, Dhoni contributed 154 runs in 7 matches, solidifying his role as a pivotal leader and batsman in India's historic victory.

Commanding the longer format

In 2008, Dhoni assumed the Test captaincy and steered the Indian team to the pinnacle of Test cricket by securing the top spot in the ICC rankings, a historic achievement since the inception of Test rankings in 2001. Under Dhoni's leadership, India displayed dominance across various series, ultimately clinching the ICC Test Championship Mace in 2009.

A World Cup after 28 years

After assuming the ODI captaincy, MS Dhoni led India to numerous victories on foreign soil between 2007 and 2011. However, the pinnacle of his career arrived in 2011, when India clinched the ODI World Cup after a 28-year wait under Dhoni's captaincy. The iconic moment came in the final when Dhoni's memorable innings saw him score 91 runs from just 79 balls, culminating in a game-winning six that etched itself into cricketing folklore.

Three ICC trophies

Two years after guiding India to victory in the ODI World Cup, Dhoni achieved another milestone by leading India to triumph in the ICC Champions Trophy. In a tense, nail-biting thriller, India successfully defended 129 runs, with Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ishant Sharma claiming two wickets to secure the victory against England. This achievement made Dhoni the only Indian captain to lead the team to success in three ICC tournaments.

Dominant India across formats

During Dhoni's captaincy reign, India enjoyed a golden era across all three formats of cricket—test cricket, ODI, and T20—from 2010 to 2014. This period was marked by unparalleled success and sustained dominance on the global stage. Dhoni's astute leadership kept India at the summit of world cricket and propelled him to the top spot as the premier ODI batsman in the ICC rankings.
