The Australian southpaw who makes batting against India look effortless
One name sticks out among the great clashes in India's cricketing history: Travis Head. As the Australian batting maestro turns 31st today, it's the perfect time to acknowledge his dominance over India.
Head's batting style blends grace and determination. He has scored over 1,700 international runs against India, averaging more than 50 in Tests. From his WTC final exploits to his stunning ODI World Cup Final performance, his innings has frequently plagued Indian bowlers. On his auspicious day, let's remember five unforgettable knocks that turned him into their greatest foe.
When Australia faced India in the 2023 World Test Championship Final, it was billed as a fight of equals. However, Travis Head turned the tide in Australia's advantage with an innings of unwavering domination.
Walking in at 76-3, Head and Steve Smith stabilised the innings before taking over. His superb strokeplay against India's speed trio of Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Umesh Yadav had them searching for solutions. His innings featured 25 boundaries and a masterpiece in counterattacking cricket. By the time he left, Australia posted a dominating 469, and India's chances of a comeback were dashed.
Under the brilliant lights of Narendra Modi Stadium, Head delivered one of the most memorable ODI knocks seen in a World Cup final. Chasing a modest 241, Head didn't just lead Australia to their sixth World Cup victory; he defined the game.
Not only did he play well, but he also maintained his cool under pressure. Earlier, he made a sensational catch to eliminate Rohit Sharma, derailing India's momentum. Head demolished the Indian attack with the bat, scoring a magnificent 137. His smooth handling of Bumrah and Shami in the powerplay set the tone, and his bold sixes against spin stunned a 130,000-strong crowd.
Head's performance in Adelaide, facing India under the light of the pink ball, was spectacular. With Australia behind 38-4 against an energised Indian pace assault, Head mounted a stunning response.
With 17 boundaries and four sixes, he played with Siraj and Harshit Rana, finding holes at will. His strike rate of 99.29 demonstrated his ability to shift gears smoothly. Head's scorching 140 revitalised Australia's innings and secured a commanding first-innings lead. Finally, the Australians won by ten wickets.
During the 2024/25 Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Head delivered yet another masterpiece at Brisbane's Gabba. Batting first, Head used deliberate aggressiveness, punishing anything short or wide. His 152-run knock came at a strike rate of 95, helping Australia achieve the intimidating total of 445.
The innings were more than just about runs; they were also about time. Head guarded the tailenders as the top order faltered, keeping India on the pitch for over two days. Though the game ended in a draw, his effort kept Australia alive in the series.
Even in the smallest format, Head posed a threat to India. In a high-scoring match of the ICC T20 World Cup Super-Eights 2024, India scored a scary 205/5. In response, Head unleashed a fierce onslaught, scoring 76 runs at an incredible strike rate of 176.74.
Faced with Bumrah and Ashwin, he used reverse sweeps, slog sweeps, and everything in between. Though India won, Head's century meant the match went down to the wire, praising him even in loss.
