Know Your Captain: Kapil Dev’s 1983 – The Greatest Underdog Story in Cricket’s History

In 1983, Kapil Dev and his team etched their names in the annals of cricket history by defeating the formidable West Indies in the World Cup final. Despite having beaten the West Indies twice in their previous encounters, India entered the final as the underdogs. The West Indies, having recovered from an initial setback to India, went on a six-match winning streak, including a dominant eight-wicket victory over Pakistan in the semi-finals.

India’s journey to the final was a roller-coaster. They experienced highs and lows, losing to Australia and the West Indies in the league stage. However, a miraculous unbeaten 175 from Kapil Dev against Zimbabwe kept their hopes alive. They went on to defeat Australia in a must-win match to qualify for the semi-finals, where they faced England. Contrary to England’s expectations of an easy victory at Old Trafford, India delivered an exceptional all-round performance, winning by six wickets and setting up a final clash with the West Indies at Lord’s.

The Final Showdown at Lords

On June 25, 1983, Lord’s presented a green, bouncy pitch for the title match between the two-time defending champions, West Indies, and the determined Indian team. While the West Indies were expected to secure their third consecutive title, the Indian team, buoyed by optimism, was prepared to fight till the end.

The West Indies started strong, with Andy Roberts dismissing Sunil Gavaskar for two runs. K Srikkanth and MohinderAmarnath fought back with resilience, contributing crucial runs. Srikkanth, in particular, played some memorable strokes, including a notable square-drive off Roberts, scoring 38 runs, which would become the highest score in the final. However, after Amarnath was bowled by Michael Holding, and despite a brief flourish by Sandeep Patil, the West Indian bowlers quickly dismantled the middle order. A last-wicket partnership between Syed Kirmani and Balwinder Sandhu brought India to a total of 183 runs, which seemed insufficient against the powerful West Indian batting lineup.

Turning the Tide

Balwinder Sandhu provided India with an early breakthrough by bowling a delivery that hit the top of Gordon Greenidge’s off-stump. Viv Richards then entered the scene, playing aggressively and scoring boundaries at will. His onslaught seemed to indicate an easy West Indies victory, especially against MadanLal, who he targeted relentlessly. However, just as Kapil Dev was about to replace MadanLal, the bowler insisted on one more over. This decision proved pivotal as Richards attempted a pull shot, and Kapil Dev made an incredible running catch to dismiss the West Indies star for 33 runs.

Richards’ dismissal energized the Indian team. They fielded brilliantly, and Roger Binny lured Clive Lloyd into a loose shot, resulting in his dismissal. The West Indies found themselves struggling at 76 for six, a scenario few had envisioned. The crowd at Lord’s and millions of viewers in India watched in amazement as the match unfolded.

The Final Push

Jeff Dujon and Malcolm Marshall provided some resistance with a partnership of 43 runs. However, MohinderAmarnath, with his deceptively innocuous bowling, broke through by dismissing Dujon. Amarnath then took another crucial wicket by catching Marshall at slip. With each falling wicket, India’s victory seemed increasingly attainable.

The final wicket came when Amarnath trapped Michael Holding leg before wicket. As umpire Dickie Bird raised his finger, the match concluded with the West Indies all out for 140 runs, and India winning by 43 runs. The cricket world was stunned by this upset, and Indian cricket had a new hero in Kapil Dev.
