Is THIS Spinner the Perfect Replacement for Injured Kuldeep Yadav in India’s ODI Setup?

The mystery spinner who could seal his place for India in 2025

India’s upcoming campaign in the Champions Trophy 2025 has thrown up an intriguing selection conundrum. With Kuldeep Yadav sidelined due to injury, this mystery spinner has emerged as a strong contender to fill the void. His recent performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and international cricket have reignited hopes of him breaking into India’s ODI squad.

Varun shines in the Vijay Hazare trophy

Varun Chakravarthy has been the standout performer in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, showcasing incredible consistency. The Tamil Nadu spinner is currently the leading wicket-taker, with 18 scalps in six matches. His economy rate of 4.36 is the best among bowlers, and he has taken a minimum of 15 wickets, solidifying his reputation as an economical yet potent bowler.

Chakravarthy began the campaign with impressive spells of 2/36 against Uttar Pradesh and 2/39 versus J&K. He followed it up with a 1/49 against Vidarbha before unleashing his magic against Mizoram, where he returned with sensational figures of 5/9. The momentum continued as he scalped 3/34 against Chhattisgarh and delivered a match-winning 5/52 against Rajasthan in the pre-quarterfinal.

Is Varun ahead of Kuldeep?

Kuldeep Yadav, a linchpin in India’s ODI setup, is recovering from a recent injury and has just resumed bowling in the nets. His absence opens the door for Chakravarthy, who offers a fresh attacking option in the middle overs. While India has the likes of Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar, none of them brings the mystery element that Chakravarthy does.

Interestingly, India’s management also faces a dilemma about whether to recall Yuzvendra Chahal, a proven ODI spinner. However, if selectors opt for a forward-looking approach, Varun’s current form could push him ahead of Kuldeep and Chahal in the Champions Trophy squad.

International comeback and IPL legacy

After a three-year hiatus, Chakravarthy returned strongly to international cricket in 2024. In the T20I series against South Africa, he took 12 wickets in four matches, including a five-wicket haul in Gqeberha. His ability to dismiss key batters like Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, and David Miller underscores his knack for delivering under pressure.

Chakravarthy’s IPL exploits further cement his case. With 83 wickets in the tournament, the spinner has proven his mettle on the big stage. His control and variations make him a nightmare for batters, especially in the shorter formats.

A mystery spinner in 50-over cricket

Although Chakravarthy is yet to debut in ODIs, his List A record speaks volumes. In just 23 matches, he has picked up 59 wickets at an impressive average of 13. His economy rate of just over 4 highlights his ability to contain runs, a crucial aspect in 50-over cricket. Notably, he has four five-wicket hauls in this format, including two in this season’s Vijay Hazare Trophy.

The spinner has seamlessly transitioned from a T20 specialist to a reliable 50-over bowler. His recent exploits against Rajasthan, where his 5/52 dismantled the opposition, exemplify his adaptability and skill in the longer white-ball format.

Gambhir’s faith and Varun’s x-factor

One of Varun’s biggest backers has been Gautam Gambhir, who played a key role in his return to international cricket. Gambhir’s trust in the spinner’s abilities could influence the selectors’ decision, especially with the Champions Trophy looming large.

Varun's ability to turn the game around in the middle overs sets him apart. His mystery spin and calm demeanour under pressure make him a valuable asset. Against stronger teams, his unorthodox style could prove to be the X-factor India needs.

The road ahead

As the Champions Trophy squad announcement looms, all eyes will be on the selectors’ choices. Chakravarthy’s stellar form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and his ability to thrive in high-pressure situations make a compelling case for his inclusion. While Kuldeep’s return will bolster India’s spin attack in the long run, Varun offers a unique blend of mystery and control that could be pivotal in the marquee event. The spinner from Tamil Nadu has done everything in his power to stake his claim — now, the ball is in the selectors’ court.
