Is Deadpool & Wolverine A Satire On Marvel’s Multiverse? Film’s Reported Fan Preview Hints At It

Deadpool & Wolverine tries to integrate X-Men, once the property of 20th Century Fox. But how it fares, still remains to be seen.

Deadpool & Wolverine, the upcoming American superhero film, is based on the Marvel Comics characters Deadpool and Wolverine. Backed by Marvel Studios, the film is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and a sequel to Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018). Helmed by Shawn Levy from, the film stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively, while Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen play key roles.

It is rather interesting to note that the third Deadpool film was being developed by 20th Century Fox, but the studio was later acquired by Disney. Clearly, the control of the character of Deadpool was transferred to Marvel Studios, and in turn, MCU. However, it was not until Jackman came on board to reprise his role as Wolverine from Fox's X-Men film series, that the film found itself in shape. So, what can the audience expect from a Deadpool film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is full of the likes of Spider-Man, Thor and the Hulk?

As reported by The Guardian, the thirty-seven minutes of footage screened for fans in London, it seems that both Levy and Reynolds have not put too much thought into how the antihero really works out in this new universe at all. As per the film’s premise, Deadpool needs to save his world but he can only do that with Wolverine, who is vital to completing that task. That’s how Marvel too brought back Jackman’s mutant despite his death in 2017’s Logan. And interestingly, both Reynolds and Jackman have not changed much when it comes to their characters.

Going by the preview, the latest film is more like a satire of Marvel’s approach to the multiverse. While Deadpool is nothing more than a naughty school kid, the film now features him in a whole new superhero dimension. Meanwhile, there are chances that Deadpool & Wolverine will not be available for a future Avengers film, but there’s no big fuss about them now being part of the MCU at all?

Now with the film’s impending release, it would be interesting to see if Levy and Reynolds are able to integrate Deadpool and the X-Men to make a superhero buddy film for the ages? But that’s something that remains to be seen.

As for its storyline, the film is set six years after the events of Deadpool 2 (2018). Clearly, Wade Wilson is shown living a quiet life, having left the mercenary Deadpool behind him. However, the Time Variance Authority (TVA) put him on a new mission, he needs to reluctantly join an even more reluctant Wolverine to undertake the mission, which can alter the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Deadpool & Wolverine is slated to be released in the United States on July 26, 2024.
