The auction promises excitement, as CSK aims to build a squad capable of clinching a record sixth IPL title
Five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are gearing up for the 2025 mega auction with plans to revamp their squad. After narrowly missing out on the IPL 2024 playoffs, CSK looks ready to rebuild under the legendary MS Dhoni, who could be entering his final season. The franchise has retained key players like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja for ₹18 crore each, along with Matheesha Pathirana and Shivam Dube.
Ahead of the auction, let’s take a look at the five players CSK may target as they aim to return to title-winning ways.
Quinton de Kock, recently released by Lucknow Super Giants, is expected to be a hot commodity in the auction. The South African wicketkeeper-batsman has shown his aggressive batting prowess at the top order, making him an ideal fit for CSK. His attacking play style would complement Gaikwad’s more composed approach, forming a dynamic right-left opening combination. De Kock’s experience on slower tracks like Ekana suggests he could thrive at the Chepauk as well. His wicketkeeping skills also provide a backup option for CSK, especially as Dhoni’s retirement looms. However, with many franchises interested, his price could soar beyond CSK’s budget.

Rishabh Pant’s unexpected release by Delhi Capitals ahead of the auction has sparked speculation about him joining CSK. Known for his explosive batting and sharp wicketkeeping, Pant has often been viewed as a natural successor to MS Dhoni. With 3,284 runs in 111 IPL matches at a strike rate of 148.93, he has proven himself as a game-changer. Pant could not only bolster CSK’s middle order but also step into a leadership role, providing valuable guidance to the younger players. The prospect of Pant in yellow could be exciting for fans, though his acquisition may require CSK to spend big in the auction.
Chennai Super Kings have a history of relying on experienced finishers to close out tight matches. With the release of Moeen Ali, Daryl Mitchell, and Dhoni nearing retirement, CSK needs a dependable finisher in the middle order. David Miller fits the bill perfectly, averaging 45.23 at a strike rate of 145.26 over the last three IPL seasons. His ability to perform under pressure and finish games aligns with CSK’s tactical approach. Additionally, Miller’s left-handed batting would add balance to a predominantly right-handed lineup, making him a strong candidate for CSK’s middle-order reinforcement.

Deepak Chahar has been a key player for CSK, taking 76 wickets in 81 matches, and is their fifth-highest wicket-taker of all time. Despite not being retained ahead of the 2025 auction, Chahar is confident about rejoining CSK, where he has thrived since 2018. Known for his new-ball exploits, Chahar has been instrumental in CSK’s title runs in 2018, 2021, and 2023. While injuries have been a concern, his ability to swing the ball and deliver in powerplays makes him a valuable asset. CSK might consider using the Right to Match (RTM) card if the bidding for Chahar aligns with their strategy.

In a surprising move, England’s James Anderson has entered the IPL auction for the first time, setting his base price at ₹1.25 crore. Although 42 and retired from international cricket, Anderson’s vast experience and skillset could attract interest from CSK. The franchise has a track record of backing seasoned players, and Anderson’s dual role as a mentor and bowler could be invaluable. With Dwayne Bravo no longer part of the squad, Anderson’s guidance would be beneficial for CSK’s younger bowlers. His experience in Indian conditions could be an asset, making him a potential target for the men in yellow in the upcoming auction.
