From the present English T20I squad meant to face India, only one player makes the cut
India will open its T20I 2025 season on January 22 by hosting England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata for the first T20I game of a five-match series. Team England has already arrived in India for the T20I series, following which a separate squad will also play India in an ODI series.
Head-to-head, India has the upper hand over England with 13 wins compared to England’s 11. However, when it comes to scoring runs in India versus England matches, English batters have had a better say.
Ahead of the match, let us take a look at the top English batters who have scored the most runs against India in the shortest format of the game.
England’s skipper, Jos Buttler, is at the top of the chart when it comes to scoring runs against India for England. Since 2011, Buttler has played 22 games against India, having scored 498 runs at an average of 33.20 and a strike rate of 145.61. His highest score to date remains an 83 not out against India. He has also scored four half-centuries against the Men in Blue.
When it comes to scoring the most runs in India versus England T20Is across teams, Virat Kohli tops the table with 648 runs. However, given he retired from the T20I format, Buttler has the opportunity to topple him if he scores 150 runs in the upcoming series.
Jason Roy is the second-highest T20I run scorer for England against India. In 15 matches that he has played against the Men in Blue, Roy accumulated 356 runs at an average of 23.73 and a strike rate of 131.85. Roy has been off the team for quite some time, having played his last T20I game against India in 2022. Last year, he made it clear that he has no intention of retiring from international cricket and is doing his best to make a comeback.
One of the finest captains England has ever produced, Eoin Morgan, was part of the English T20 squad that won the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup, whereas, under his captaincy, England also reached the finale of the 2016 edition. Further, he gave England its first-ever 50-over World Cup victory in 2019. With the willow against India in T20Is, Morgan scored 347 runs in 16 matches at an average of 26.69 with a strike rate of 141.63. Morgan retired as England’s third-highest run-scorer in T20Is against India.
Alexander Hales retired from international cricket to focus more on domestic and franchise-based T20 cricket. Hales played only 10 T20I games against India but scored 331 runs at an average of 41.37 and a strike rate of 134.55. His individual score of 86 not out remains the highest score by an English batter against India in the T20I format.
On Wednesday, the game begins at 7:00 p.m. Indian Standard Time.
