IND vs. ENG ODI: India’s Biggest ODI Wins Over England in the Last Decade

Will India continue their dominance, or will England script a turnaround?

India and England are set to reignite their ODI rivalry as they face off in a three-match series, beginning on February 6 at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. With the ICC Champions Trophy on the horizon, both teams will look to build momentum and fine-tune their squads. India enters the series with confidence after a dominant 4-1 victory in the T20Is, including a crushing 150-run win in the final match at Wankhede. Meanwhile, England will be eager to bounce back and regain form in the 50-over format. Before the action unfolds, let’s look back at India’s most emphatic ODI victories over England in the past decade.

India’s commanding win in the 2023 World Cup

One of India’s most memorable wins came in the 2023 ICC World Cup when they demolished England by 100 runs in Lucknow. The match was low-scoring, but India’s grit and discipline stood out. Batting first, India posted 229/9 in 50 overs on a tricky surface. Rohit Sharma scored 87 runs off 101 balls, while KL Rahul (39) and Suryakumar Yadav (49) chipped in with valuable contributions.

England’s bowlers, led by David Willey (3/45) and Chris Woakes (2/33), restricted India from setting a massive target. However, England’s chase turned into a disaster. Jasprit Bumrah (3/32) and Mohammed Shami (4/22) ran riot, reducing the visitors to 39/4 in just nine overs. England never recovered and folded for a mere 129 in 34.5 overs.

A perfect 10-wicket victory at the Oval

India achieved one of their most dominant ODI wins over England at The Oval in 2022, thrashing them by 10 wickets. It was a day to remember for Jasprit Bumrah, who delivered a sensational spell of 6/19, dismantling England’s batting lineup. England was bundled out for just 110 in 25.2 overs, with Jason Roy, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes all dismissed for ducks in the first three overs. Jos Buttler (30) was the only batter to show some resistance, but Bumrah and Mohammed Shami (3/31) ensured that England had no chance to rebuild.

Chasing a modest 111, India’s openers made light work of the target. Rohit Sharma smashed an unbeaten 76 off 58 balls, including seven fours and five sixes, while Shikhar Dhawan played a composed 31*. The duo chased the target in 18.4 overs, handing India a thumping victory with 188 balls to spare.

Kuldeep’s magic seals victory in Nottingham

In the first ODI of the 2018 series at Nottingham, India registered a comprehensive 8-wicket victory, courtesy of Kuldeep Yadav’s brilliance with the ball and Rohit Sharma’s masterclass with the bat. England started well, with Jason Roy (38) and Jonny Bairstow (38) scoring briskly. However, Kuldeep turned the game on its head with a mesmerizing spell of 6/25. He quickly removed Roy, Bairstow, and Joe Root, leaving England in tatters. Ben Stokes (50) and Jos Buttler (53) attempted a rescue act, but Kuldeep continued his dominance, dismissing them both. England was bowled out for 268 in 49.5 overs.

India’s chase was smooth, with Shikhar Dhawan providing a quickfire 40 off 27 balls before falling to Moeen Ali. Rohit Sharma remained unbeaten on 137 off 114 balls, smashing 15 fours and 4 sixes, while Virat Kohli added 75 off 82. India reached the target comfortably in 40.1 overs with 59 balls to spare.

A 66-run victory in Pune

India kicked off their 2021 home ODI series against England with a 66-run victory in Pune. Batting first, India posted an imposing total of 317/5 in 50 overs. Shikhar Dhawan was the star with a brilliant 98 off 106 balls, narrowly missing out on a century. Virat Kohli contributed 56 off 60, while KL Rahul provided late fireworks with an unbeaten 62 off 43 balls. Krunal Pandya also made a memorable impact, smashing 58* off just 31 balls.

England started aggressively, with Jonny Bairstow hammering 94 off 66 balls and Jason Roy adding 46 off 35. England cruised at 135/0 in 14.2 overs at one stage, but India’s bowlers fought back. Prasidh Krishna (4/54) and Shardul Thakur (3/37) triggered a collapse as England slipped from 169/3 to 251 all out in 42.1 overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/30) provided crucial breakthroughs, sealing India’s win.
