Heavy Rains Bring Pune to a Standstill: Stranded Residents Share Shocking Images on X!

Over the last 24 hours, Pune has encountered a torrential downpour that has paralysed the city. As the heavy rainfall continues to grapple the city, locals are bumping into several troublesome issues like major traffic gridlocks, large-scale flooding, landslides, fallen branches and uprooted trees on the streets.

As the downpour fiercely heightened overnight, many locals of Pune took to X (formerly Twitter) to share images of chaos and mayhem from the city. These X posts feature everything- from flooded streets to locals attempting to survive in challenging situations.

Over the past 48 hours, due to the heavy rainfall in Pune’s reservoirs’ catchment areas, the water levels have significantly risen in all the major four dams supplying water to the city. For the first time in this year’s monsoon on July 24, i.e.-Wednesday, the irrigation department initiated the discharge of water from the Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River, owing to the water level reaching 95% capacity of the dam.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pune. Following this, Suhas Diwase, who is the District Collector, ordered the schools to remain closed due to the unceasing rain and substantial waterlogging. As reported by IMD, the Pune district has recorded 567.2 mm of rainfall between June 1 to July 24, 2024.

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde has confirmed his contact with the Indian Air Force and the Army for assistance with the deployment of food relief services in Pune and the surrounding areas. Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar, who is the Deputy Chief Minister, is coordinating with officials to handle the situation with ease.

According to IMD’s report, throughout Friday, Pune is set to encounter even heavier rainfall in specific ghat regions, and moderate showers in the plains.
