East Bengal vs. Mohun Bagan: An Account of Trophy Count Ahead of the Kolkata Derby

Goals, tackles, cards, and fights among the crowds—that’s what the Kolkata Derby is all about. Coming this October 19, Mohun Bagan is set to take on East Bengal in what will be the sixth Kolkata Derby of 2024.

Although the ongoing season has recently started and the battle for trophies is yet to turn intense, in the following paragraphs, let us look at the overall trophy count of the two archrivals, who are also among the oldest clubs in the world and share a long history.

Trophy count

When it comes to the main domestic league of India, the Mariners lead the way. The domestic league has seen multiple transitions, starting with the National Football League, changing into the I-League, and now the Indian Super League is hailed as India’s tier-I league, whereas the I-League has become the tier-II league.

Mohun Bagan has six titles across the leagues, whereas East Bengal has only three, having last won the National Football League in 2003-2004. Since 2004, the Red and Gold Brigade has not won the domestic league, creating a drought of 20 years and counting.

Moving on to the ISL Cup, which has become another significant trophy in India in recent years, Mohun Bagan has picked up one whereas East Bengal has none.

Durand Cup, one of the oldest football tournaments not only in India but also in the world, has always been equally matched, with Mohun Bagan lifting 17 titles whereas East Bengal tailing with 16.

Even in the Federation Cup, which has now been replaced by the Super Cup, Mohun Bagan has an upper hand with 14 trophies, whereas East Bengal is down to nine titles.

However, two tournaments where East Bengal has always flourished more are the Calcutta Football League and the IFA Shield. In the Calcutta Football League, East Bengal leads the chart with 39 titles, whereas Mohun Bagan only has 30. The IFA Shield has gone to East Bengal’s cabinet on 29 occasions whereas

Head-to-head

Head-to-head, East Bengal leads the way with 142 wins out of the 398 games the two teams have played against each other. Mohun Bagan has secured 129 victories against the Red and Gold Brigade. The remaining 127 fixtures between the two have ended in draws.

In total, Mohun Bagan is presently leading the tally with 117 trophies, whereas East Bengal has 114 trophies in its cabinet.

Last five encounters

September 3, 2024 – Chief Ministers Cup: Mohun Bagan won the game on victories.

  • July 13, 2024 – Calcutta Football League: East Bengal scored two goals to win the game, and Mohun Bagan could only salvage one goal in dying minutes.
  • March 10, 2024 – Indian Super League: Mohun Bagan scored three goals and won the game. East Bengal could only reply with one goal.
  • February 03, 2024 – Indian Super League: Mohun Bagan and East Bengal both scored twice to see the game end with a deadlock.
  • January 19, 2024 – Super Cup: East Bengal enjoyed a convincing victory with three goals against Mohun Bagan’s one goal.

So far in the five games the two clubs have played in 2024, both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have won two games each, whereas one game ended in a draw.

On October 19, Mohun Bagan’s sole aim will be to keep its momentum going, given the club is presently fourth on the ISL table. However, East Bengal will play not only to disrupt Bagan’s journey but also to score its first points of the ISL 2024-2025 season.
