Disney Drops First Trailer for Live-Action Remake of ‘Snow White’: Decoding the First Glimpse; Know What Lies Ahead

Disney drops the first trailer for the live-action ‘Snow White,’ offering a fresh take on the classic tale that has everyone talking.

After months of anticipation, Disney has finally revealed the first trailer for the live-action remake of ‘Snow White.’ The trailer made its grand debut at the beloved D23 event in Anaheim, California. Directed by Marc Webb, this reimagining of the 1937 classic ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ is scheduled to hit theaters this spring.

The Trailer

The sneak peek trailer is a mere 75 seconds, but it very briefly illustrates Snow White’s enemy, the Evil Queen, played by Gal Gadot. The ‘Wonder Woman’ actress appears poised and arrogant as she stands before the legendary talking glass mirror.

The preview clip also introduces the Seven Dwarfs, who can be seen in one scene happily dancing beside Snow White as she sings the legendary ‘Whistle While You Work,’ from the movie’s original 1937 soundtrack, originally sung by Adriana Caselotti. This is despite Disney’s previous assertion on portraying the Dwarfs differently; the group still seem to have the well-known small size of the Seven Dwarfs.

The new Snow White, Rachel Zegler said, “I think any young person, any little girl if you get to put on a Disney princess dress and be her for a day let alone six months… it’s just been the most amazing experience and I can't wait to share it with you all.”

The original and the Remake

Taking another direction with the re-imagining of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,’ this revamped version of the 1937 classic animated film is gripping audiences. Essentially, the original plot details a young Snow White having to escape the castle after her jealous stepmother, The Evil Queen, coerces the Huntsman to kill her as an act of envy. The Huntsman eventually takes pity on Snow White and ultimately allows her to escape before she is killed, leading her to take refuge at the cottage in the woods housing seven dwarfs.

The Evil Queen discovers Snow White's survival and follows her to the cottage, where she then tricks Snow White into consuming a poisoned apple. After ingesting the fruit, Snow White falls into a deep sleep, awaiting the kiss of true love, bestowed by a prince- which later revives her from that state.

In this remake, Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot revealed that Zegler’s Snow White will not be saved by the prince. Instead, she’s focused on fulfilling her potential as a leader, inspired by her late father’s belief that she could be fearless, fair, brave, and true. Ansu Kabia has the role of the Huntsman, while Andrew Burnap takes on the new role of Jonathan. Some of the classics from the original soundtrack will be included, but the composers, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, have been contracted to compose new songs for the film.

The Controversies

The film, which stirred controversy when first announced in 2016, has only intensified debates with the release of its teaser. Critics have taken to social media to slam Disney for casting Rachel Zegler as Snow White. Zegler was announced as the film’s star in 2021 amidst some controversy, with a number of individuals reacting negatively to her casting because she doesn’t appear to be as white as the snow from the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale.

Peter Dinklage, famed for ‘Game of Thrones,’ sparked significant controversy with his harsh criticism of the film, leading the showrunners to scrap the seven dwarves altogether and replace them with CGI characters. This decision has not been received all that well by fans, especially since the film was intended to be a live-action remake.
