It is believed that making silver and gold purchases on this day brings good luck, wealth and prosperity to the buyer.
Dhanteras is an auspicious festival that marks the beginning of Diwali, and it is traditionally celebrated two days before Diwali. It is observed on the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Kartik, as per the Hindu calendar.
Since the day is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kuber, and Lord Dhanvantari, people engage in rituals and make specific purchases, which are believed to attract wealth and prosperity. This year, Dhanteras is set to be celebrated on October 29, and it is said that investing in gold or silver, especially jewelry, is considered auspicious on this special day. Meanwhile, people also buy utensils, and electronics in an attempt to welcome Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber to their homes, since both of them represent wealth and prosperity.
This year, on October 29, the day of Dhanteras, the Trayodashi Tithi will begin at 12:00 am and end at 2:45 am on October 30. During this time, it is not only favourable to perform rituals, but also engage in other tasks. The correct time to perform Dhanteras Puja on October 29 will begin at 7:27 pm and conclude at 9:16 pm on October 29. There’s also Pradosh Kaal that will occur from 6:37 pm to 9:16 pm.
According to mythology, on the day of Dhanteras, Goddess Durga and Lord Kubera rose from the ocean during the "Sagar Manthan”. Hence, the two are worshipped on the auspicious day of Trayodashi. It is said that when the Devas and Asuras were moving over the sea with "Amrit," it was Lord Dhanvantari who emerged last during "Sagar Manthan."
With Dhanteras, the five-day Diwali festival of Diwali also is kick started, and it is also known as Dhantrayodashi and Dhanvantari Trayodashi.
