Today marks the birth anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, an iconic figure in modern Indian history. Known as the "Missile Man of India" and the "People's President," Dr. Kalam was a renowned scientist, educator, and statesman, admired for his humility and dedication. A lifelong learner and teacher, he was delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong when he tragically passed away from cardiac arrest on July 27, 2015, at the age of 83. His legacy continues to inspire generations across the world.

Education

During his school years, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was considered an average student in terms of grades but was known for his curiosity and diligence. He had a strong passion for learning, with a particular interest in mathematics. Kalam completed his schooling at Schwartz Higher Secondary School and later graduated in physics from Saint Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli, in 1954. He then pursued a specialization in Aeronautical Engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology, which laid the foundation for his illustrious career in science and aerospace.

Family

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, widely known as APJ Abdul Kalam, was born on October 15, 1931, in a small village in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. His father, Jainulabdeen, was a boat owner and served as the imam of a local mosque, while his mother, Ashiamma, was a homemaker.

Journey of a Scientist 

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam began his career as a scientist at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). In 1969, he transitioned to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he led the development of India’s first Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III), successfully launching the Rohini Satellite in 1980. After two decades at ISRO, he returned to DRDO to lead the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, spearheading the creation of the AGNI and PRITHVI missiles. His pivotal role earned him the title of "India's Missile Man." He also served as Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister from 1992 to 1999.

Modesty 

Dr. Kalam made significant contributions to the scientific community, yet he remained humble about his accomplishments. His modesty in the face of great achievements exemplified his character and dedication to his work.

Kalam as a Teacher 

Dr. Kalam, despite his numerous accomplishments, wished to be remembered primarily as a teacher. Tragically, he passed away while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong on the evening of July 27, 2015. His dedication to education and inspiring future generations remained at the forefront of his identity.
