Birthday Special: Kapil Sharma Before Comedy - The Odd Jobs He Did in Early Days

Before making it as a comedian, Kapil Sharma took on various jobs to earn money.

They say comedy comes from struggle. When life gets tough, laughter becomes the best way to cope. Maybe that’s why some of the best comedians—the ones who make us laugh till our stomachs hurt—have faced the hardest times. And Kapil Sharma is one of them. Born into a lower-middle-class family, his journey to success was anything but easy. Before he became the comedy king, he had to take up all sorts of odd jobs just to get by. But no matter how tough things got, he never lost his sense of humor. If anything, those struggles only made his comedy sharper. Well, look where he stands today!

Born on April 2, 1981, Kapil Sharma celebrates his 44th birthday today. On this occasion, let's learn about the various jobs that he did before comedy.

Phone Booth Operator

In his teenage years, Sharma worked at a Public Call Office (PCO), managing the operations of a local phone booth. As he has shared in several of his interviews, this job offered him insights into diverse human interactions, enriching his observational skills.

Notably, that was a part-time job, for which he got Rs 500 per month. He shared in an interview with Curly Tales, "I used to work for lesser hours then. From 10 pm to 1 am, and then in the morning from 4 am to 7 am."

Garment Mill Worker

To make ends meet, Sharma took up employment at a garment mill. The demanding environment taught him work ethics which later shaped his comedy career.

Theater Instructor

Kapil's passion for the performing arts led him to teach theater to college students. His father was unwell at that time, and hence he needed to earn more in order to support his family. This role not only honed his acting and comedic skills but also provided a modest income during challenging times.

Although he studied Commercial Art and also did a diploma in Computer Science, his primary focus was on theatre. As he shared in an interview with The Times of India, "I learned nothing about either Commercial Art or Computer Science. My father had got very unwell at that time and I requested my principal if I could teach theatre to earn money. That's when I learned a lot as a teacher, as you learn a lot from students while teaching. I used to do histrionics and everyone would love it."

Besides, he picked soda bottle crates, sang jingles, and more to make a living.

An Interesting Fact: Kapil Sharma Actually Wanted to Become a Singer

Yes, you read it right! While we know Sharma as a comedian today, he actually wanted to become a singer. During his teenage, he used to sing jingles and also take part in various music competitions. In fact, he came to Mumbai to pursue his career as a singer. He was a wild card entrant on the reality show ‘Star Ya Rockstar’ and was noticed by Lata Mangeshkar who tweeted, "Kapil ne itne saare dialogues bolne ke baad itna accha gaya. Main usey bahut bahut badhai deti hoon." Singer Sonu Nigam also praised his singing abilities.
