Bartle Test: What type of gamer are you?

You’ll definitely start categorizing your squad into these types now

Bartle's theory of player types has deeply influenced the field of game design. By understanding the motivations and preferences of different player types, game designers can create more engaging and immersive gaming experiences that cater to a diverse range of player needs and interests.

Additionally, Bartle's work has also been applied to the concept of gamification, which involves incorporating game elements and principles into non-game contexts, such as education, marketing, and employee engagement, to motivate and engage participants.

Richard Bartle: The Man behind the theory

Meet Richard Bartle, the wizard behind the screen, weaving magic in the world of online gaming! As the co-creator of the groundbreaking multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), MUD (Multi-User Dungeon), back in 1978, Bartle didn't just dip his toes into the gaming waters; he dove headfirst into a deeper analysis of the players playing video games.

He delved deep into the psyche of gamers, unraveling the mysteries of player motivations and behaviors like a virtual Sherlock Holmes. His magnum opus, The Bartle Test—a theory to bring forth the 4 type of gamers.

It's important to recognize that these categories are not rigid classifications. Most individuals exhibit traits from multiple categories, but typically, there's one dominant trait that influences their overall gaming preference.

The Achiever

These players are the ultimate point-hoarders and badge-collectors. They play for that rank up, levelling up their characters and abilities. For them, they are not playing well if there’s no rank to show off.

They're the ones who thrive on ranking up and showing off their progress to friends (not in a bad way though), happy about learning the fastest route to victory or unlocking that elusive achievement.

With a keen eye for incentives where every extra mile is a badge of honor, Achievers make up roughly 10% of gamers—a group you're bound to encounter in your gaming adventures.

The Explorer

They're the thrill-seekers, the treasure hunters, hidden secrets discoverer. Explorers like endless points of discovery a game has to offer. They like going to places no one has ever gone or even thought of going.

Points and prizes. No, not their cup of tea. For them, the real treasure lies in exploring new realms, unlocking hidden passages, and finding Easter Eggs hidden in nooks and crannies.

They're the ones who'll happily hit walls in search of secret passages, finding joy in discovery rather than caring about rankups or unlocking abilities. About 10% of players fall into this category, craving the excitement of the unknown.

The Socializer

These gamers find the most joy while in the company of others. Win or lose, they are prepared for it as long they are having fun with their friends. Personally, they are the best type of gamers for new comers joining a game.

For them, gaming isn't just about solo conquests; it's about collaboration, camaraderie, and shared victories.

Think of them as the team players who thrive in games like Among Us or Stumble Guys. They are happy hanging out with their friends on a Discord call and playing the game. They're all about the social experience, whether they're winning, losing or stuck mid-way through a game.

The Killer

These gamers make up less than 1% of players.

These are the hardcore competitors, the ones who live for the thrill of the fight and the taste of victory. No matter the game, they want that win.

Winning is their ultimate goal, and they'll stop at nothing to assert their dominance. While they may be few in number, their competitive spirit adds a spicy edge to the gaming landscape, keeping everyone on their toes.
